Ghana Reinforces Commitment to Transparent Diamond Trade Ahead of Kimberley Process Review Visit

As Ghana prepares to host a critical review visit under the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, the country’s commitment to strengthening governance and transparency in its diamond sector remains unwavering.

Sammy Gyamfi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), spoke at the opening of the review, underscoring significant reforms made to enhance oversight within the country’s diamond industry.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Gyamfi outlined several key measures Ghana has taken to bolster the diamond value chain, including the implementation of robust inspection and verification systems, enhanced internal control mechanisms, and targeted capacity-building programs for personnel in the sector.

These reforms, he stated, highlight Ghana’s dedication to meeting global expectations for responsible diamond trading and increasing its compliance with international standards.

“This review is a vital opportunity for us to showcase the progress Ghana has made in strengthening the governance and transparency of our diamond sector,” Gyamfi said.

“It is also an important moment for feedback and collaboration, as we remain committed to improving and aligning with global best practices in diamond trade governance.”

The Kimberley Process review visit, which is currently underway in Accra, will assess the country’s adherence to the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) standards. The KPCS is a global initiative aimed at preventing the trade in conflict diamonds, and Ghana’s efforts to maintain a transparent and ethical diamond industry are crucial to this objective.

During the visit, Ghana will present detailed reports on its legal and regulatory frameworks governing the diamond sector, the efficiency of internal control systems, and its cooperation with law enforcement and industry stakeholders.

Mr. Gyamfi emphasized that the government is open to constructive feedback and views the visit as an opportunity to further strengthen its governance structures.

“Ghana’s commitment to the Kimberley Process is not just about meeting the requirements but actively contributing to the evolution of the scheme,” he added. “We are proud to serve as Vice Chair of the Kimberley Process, and we are preparing to assume the Chairmanship in 2027. Our goal is to ensure the process remains dynamic, effective, and focused on its core mission of preventing conflict diamonds from entering legitimate trade.”

In addition to the review discussions, Mr. Gyamfi invited the visiting team to experience Ghana’s rich cultural heritage, as the review coincides with the country’s celebration of its annual heritage activities in March.

He noted that this cultural experience would add a personal dimension to the visit and showcase the country’s vibrant history and traditions.

The ongoing review is also seen as a key moment for Ghana to cement its role as a global leader in diamond industry governance and to demonstrate its proactive stance in eliminating the risk of conflict diamonds entering the market.

With the world closely watching, Ghana’s efforts to enhance the transparency and sustainability of its diamond sector will be closely scrutinized and could set an example for other nations seeking to uphold ethical standards in the global diamond trade.

As Ghana continues to advance its diamond sector reforms, it is clear that the nation remains committed not only to the success of the Kimberley Process but also to the principles of responsible sourcing and global cooperation in the fight against conflict diamonds.
