Residents of Nakolo–Kaporinia in the Kassena-Nankana West District are a step closer to connecting to the national electricity grid, thanks to a GH¢8,800 donation from private entertainment and talent management firm Kacstone Records. The support will help complete a community-led electricity extension project that has been stalled for over a decade.
For more than ten years, the farming community had struggled to access electricity, with previous appeals to government and NGOs yielding no results. Community members, led by youth activist Thomas Bugase, mobilized resources over the years, purchasing poles and materials to extend power from Nakolo Primary School to households and facilities such as boreholes and a women’s meeting center.
“The community has been self-driven since 2012, raising funds and erecting poles, but we still needed support to cover cables, installation, and contractor fees,” Mr. Bugase said. He added that access to electricity would boost dry-season vegetable farming, including pepper, cabbage, and onions, enhancing food production and incomes.
The initiative has also been seen as a lifeline for women in the community. Nancy Denia, speaking on behalf of local women, noted that electricity would enable them to start small businesses, creating economic independence and improving livelihoods.
Kacstone Records, represented by Raymond Adda, said the donation followed a needs assessment that confirmed the community’s commitment to the project. “The residents have already started this project themselves, and we are motivated to support their efforts,” he said.
The project has drawn praise from local authorities, including Michael Asagewe, Assembly Member for Nakolo Electoral Area, and Pe Gedeon Aloah, Chief of Nakolo. Both emphasized that electrification would curb youth migration, create opportunities, and help shield the community from security risks linked to bordering Burkina Faso.
With the additional funds from Kacstone Records, the Nakolo–Kaporinia community expects to complete the electricity installation, marking a major milestone in improving infrastructure, livelihoods, and economic prospects in the area.
