Kwahu Easter Drives Local Economy as Thousands Flock to Ridge Communities

Businesses and households across the Kwahu ridge are preparing for a surge in economic activity as thousands of visitors are expected to arrive for the annual Kwahu Easter Festival celebrations.

Each year, the normally quiet towns around Mpraeso and neighbouring communities transform into bustling hubs of tourism, trade and entertainment as travellers make their way up the winding roads of the Kwahu mountains.

Long before the headline attraction begins, traffic often builds along the route to the ridge. Vehicles move slowly through the mountainous terrain as traders, transport operators and food vendors position themselves to serve the growing crowds.

The highlight of the celebrations remains the paragliding festival at Odweanoma Mountain, where professional pilots glide above the valley, attracting spectators from across the country and abroad.

Since its introduction in 2005, the event has become a major tourism draw, turning the ridge into one of Ghana’s most visited destinations during the Easter period.

Beyond the spectacle in the sky, however, the celebrations have become a key economic opportunity for local communities. Hotels and guesthouses expand their operations, while open spaces and fields are converted into temporary parking areas to accommodate the influx of vehicles.

Accommodation demand also extends beyond commercial facilities. Many families open their homes to relatives and friends travelling to join the festivities, reinforcing the festival’s reputation as a national homecoming.

The growing popularity of the celebrations has encouraged investment in hospitality infrastructure, including major facilities such as Rock City Hotel.

Tourism authorities also continue to promote the Kwahu area as a destination with a range of attractions beyond Easter, including caves, forests and scenic viewpoints along the ridge.

Despite the festive atmosphere, organisers say the event requires extensive coordination. Security personnel are deployed along major routes to regulate traffic and ensure public safety, while tourism officials schedule activities such as sightseeing tours, hiking and paragliding sessions.

Traditional authorities in the area also encourage visitors to celebrate responsibly, maintain peace and protect the environment during the festivities.

The economic impact of the event is widely felt. Food vendors, transport operators, nightlife establishments and traders report increased patronage as visitors spend on accommodation, meals, entertainment and transportation.

Much of the commercial activity occurs within the informal sector, where roadside traders and small-scale businesses rely on direct sales to festival visitors.

However, the growing popularity of the celebrations also presents challenges. Traffic congestion along the narrow mountain roads and waste management concerns have become recurring issues during the festival period.

Authorities have therefore urged visitors to dispose of waste responsibly and cooperate with traffic management measures to help maintain order during the celebrations.

As Ghana continues to promote cultural events as part of its tourism development strategy, the Kwahu Easter festivities remain one of the country’s most prominent examples of how festivals can stimulate local economies and attract visitors to regional destinations.

While the image of paragliders soaring above the valley captures national attention, residents say the real impact of the festival is felt on the ground — in homes hosting guests, along roadside grills serving travellers and among businesses that depend on the annual influx of visitors.
