Residents of Yawsae, a farming community in the Sunyani Municipality of the Bono Region, now have improved access to clean drinking water following the commissioning of a mechanised borehole to address long-standing water challenges.
The water facility was constructed through a partnership between Eli’s Wells, a United States-based international non-governmental organisation, and the WENSAH Foundation, a local NGO, with funding support from donor organisation VICKI and Larry Jones.
The Ghana News Agency (GNA) gathered that the Yawsae community, with an estimated population of about 1,400 people, previously depended on a nearby stream for water, which was also used by stray animals such as cattle, pigs and dogs.
At the commissioning ceremony, Mr Isaac Osei Amponsah, Chief Executive Officer of the WENSAH Foundation, said the project was aimed at addressing the severe water shortage in the community and improving the health and wellbeing of residents.
He urged community members to ensure proper maintenance of the facility to guarantee its long-term use.
Nana Sadique Abubarkari, the Baasari Chief of Yawsae, expressed gratitude to the organisations and donors for the support, describing the borehole as a major relief for the people.
He also appealed for further assistance to repair the only existing borehole in the community that had become non-functional.
In a related development, Eli’s Wells earlier commissioned another mechanised borehole for the chiefs and people of Baakoniaba in the Sunyani Municipality.
That project was funded by Jarred and Elizabeth Stein, another international donor group.
Mr Richard Lyall, Project Manager of Eli’s Wells, said the organisation remained committed to providing clean water to underserved communities.
He disclosed that the NGO had so far constructed 19 water facilities within the municipality.
Mr Jarred Stein, President of Eli’s Wells, emphasised that access to clean water was essential for improving healthcare, saving lives, enhancing education and supporting local economic growth.
Mr Douglas Alley, Vice-President of Eli’s Wells, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting remote communities in Ghana with safe drinking water and urged beneficiary communities to take good care of the facilities.
