The Food and Drugs Authority has urged Ghanaians to be proactive in verifying product safety and holding manufacturers accountable, highlighting the critical role of informed consumers in creating a safer marketplace.
In a statement issued in Accra to mark the 2026 World Consumer Rights Day, the Authority emphasized this year’s theme, “Safe Products, Confident Consumers,” as a call to action for both businesses and the public.
The FDA noted that strong regulatory systems—including pre-market approvals, ongoing monitoring, and enforcement—are essential for protecting consumers. It also highlighted new initiatives such as the Ghana Food and Drugs Authority Integrated Regulatory Management System (GFIRMS), a digital platform allowing businesses to track applications and consumers to verify registered products in real time.
Additionally, a Reputation Management Framework is being developed to tackle misinformation and respond quickly to safety concerns. The Authority stressed that consumer uncertainty often stems from lack of information rather than ignorance, urging intensified education in markets, schools, health facilities, and online.
“Safe products without informed consumers is an incomplete loop. Confident consumers without credible regulatory systems is borrowed confidence,” the FDA stated, reaffirming its commitment to building both safer products and consumer trust.
The public was encouraged to verify items before purchase, report suspicious products, and demand accountability, highlighting that a secure and transparent marketplace is a shared responsibility.
