Forty-four Ghanaians have been rescued from a fraudulent recruitment and trafficking network in Nigeria, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced.
In a press release dated March 21, 2026, the Foreign Ministry said the victims were lured out of Ghana under false pretences, including promises of jobs and travel opportunities.
“Affected individuals were lured through deceptive means, including social media and informal recruitment channels, with false promises of employment and travel opportunities,” excerpts of the statement read.
The Foreign Ministry disclosed that upon arrival in Nigeria, the victims were subjected to harsh and exploitative conditions.
“Upon arrival, they were subjected to exploitative conditions, including restricted movement, psychological coercion, and pressure to recruit others into the scheme,” the statement added.
The rescue operation was carried out on March 16, 2026, through a joint effort involving Nigerian security agencies and Ghanaian authorities. The victims were subsequently repatriated to Ghana on March 20.
“Following a coordinated operation conducted on 16th March, 2026 by Nigerian security authorities, including the Department of State Services (DSS), in collaboration with relevant Ghanaian institutions, the victims arrived in Accra on 20th March, 2026,” the Ministry noted.
Government says it is now working closely with Nigerian authorities to dismantle the criminal syndicates behind the operation, while also providing support for the victims.
“The Government of Ghana is working closely with its Nigerian counterparts and relevant stakeholders to facilitate ongoing efforts to dismantle the criminal networks involved,” the statement said.
It further assured that measures are being put in place to support those affected.
“Steps are also being taken to ensure the protection, rehabilitation and reintegration of the victims,” the Ministry emphasised.
The Foreign Ministry also expressed gratitude to the Nigerian government for its swift intervention.
“The Ministry expresses its sincere appreciation to the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for its prompt intervention and continued cooperation,” it stated.
Reiterating its stance against such crimes, the government condemned human trafficking and fraudulent recruitment practices, urging the public to remain vigilant.
“The public is advised to exercise utmost caution, verify all travel and employment opportunities through official channels, and avoid engagement with unverified individuals or entities,” the statement cautioned.
