Renowned Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama has vowed to pursue legal action following an alleged assault in Tamale, describing the incident as part of a broader concern about accountability and public safety.
Speaking at a press conference on March 23, Mr. Mahama said his decision to take legal steps was not solely personal but aimed at protecting others who may lack the platform to speak out. “If this could happen to me, then what about the ordinary person?” he questioned, stressing the need for justice in the interest of society.
The artist reported sustaining serious injuries during the encounter, including damage to his teeth and mouth, which have affected his ability to eat and travel. As a result, he has cancelled a series of international engagements, including lectures and exhibitions across Europe and beyond.
Mr. Mahama also raised concerns about what he described as a pattern of alleged misconduct by the Special Operations Team, popularly known as the Black Maria, suggesting that such incidents could discourage young people from contributing to national development.
However, the unit has denied the allegations, stating that the incident occurred during a traffic enforcement operation and involved non-compliance by a driver. It also released video footage related to the encounter, which Mr. Mahama has dismissed as misleading.
The incident has sparked public debate around law enforcement conduct and accountability, with the outcome of any potential legal action likely to draw significant national attention.
