Analyst Warns Poor Accountability Could Undermine Public Trust in Governance

A governance expert has cautioned that weak accountability systems and prolonged tenure of underperforming political appointees could erode public confidence and slow national development.

Dr Benjamin Anyagre Aziginaateeg of the AfriKan Continental Union Consult stressed that without timely reforms, inefficiency and complacency within government institutions could deepen public dissatisfaction, particularly among young people.

Call for Stronger Oversight Systems

Dr Aziginaateeg proposed the introduction of performance-based contracts for political appointees, suggesting a 10-month evaluation cycle to ensure measurable results and sustained focus on national priorities.

He also recommended the establishment of an independent performance assessment unit to provide objective, real-time evaluations of government officials, free from political interference.

“Governing requires accurate, ground-level intelligence. Leaders must prioritise national interest over personal or political considerations,” he said.

Concerns Over Appointments and Expertise

The analyst highlighted the risks of appointing individuals without the necessary expertise, warning that such practices weaken institutions and undermine progress. He emphasised the need for competence-based appointments, where leaders understand their sectors and respect institutional systems.

“Plucking untrained loyalists for specialised roles undermines expertise and weakens national progress,” he noted.

Urgency for Proactive Leadership

Dr Aziginaateeg urged John Dramani Mahama to take decisive action by implementing timely reshuffles and holding appointees accountable before governance challenges escalate into major controversies.

He warned that failure to act could damage public trust and affect political stability, noting that citizens increasingly expect results-driven leadership.

Focus on Results-Driven Governance

According to the analyst, strengthening accountability, enforcing performance standards, and prioritising national interest are key to building resilient institutions and sustaining public confidence.

He concluded that effective governance must be people-centred, with leadership focused on delivering tangible outcomes rather than maintaining political loyalty.
