Dozens of people have been killed after a massive explosion at a military ammunition depot tore through parts of Bujumbura, triggering panic and widespread destruction late Tuesday night.
The blasts, which originated from the main arsenal in the Musaga area, followed a fire reportedly caused by an electrical fault. The situation quickly spiralled out of control as stored ammunition ignited, sending shockwaves across nearby communities.
Residents recounted a terrifying ordeal as explosions echoed through the night, with projectiles landing in residential areas. In Nyakabiga, families were forced to take cover as debris rained down, damaging homes and endangering lives.
One resident, Anitha Niyonsaba, described a near-death experience when a projectile pierced through her roof and ceiling, narrowly missing her moments after she had moved from the spot.
The Musaga depot is situated in a densely populated zone, close to key installations including the Higher Institute for Military Cadres (ISCAM), major army logistics depots, Muha military camp, and the central Mpimba prison—factors that intensified the scale of the disaster.
Authorities have attributed the incident to an electrical accident but are expected to launch a full investigation as emergency response teams continue to assess the damage and casualties.
The tragedy has raised concerns over the safety of military facilities located near civilian communities, as residents grapple with the aftermath of one of the deadliest incidents in the city in recent years.
