Traders at Tema Community Two market have urged the Tema West Municipal Assembly (TWMA) to provide more details about the planned reconstruction of their market as part of the “24-Hour Economy Market” initiative.
The call came during a stakeholder meeting attended by local leaders including MP James Enu, Municipal Chief Executive Ludwig Teye Totimeh, Assemblywoman Mary Ennoo, and project consultant Ben Debrah.
While authorities outlined the vision for a modern, secure, round-the-clock commercial hub with amenities such as a daycare centre, police post, and clinic, traders sought clarity on engineering plans, project timelines, and the impact on daily operations during construction.
Some traders, including Samuel Asare, questioned whether the new market sheds would be allocated free of charge. Assemblywoman Ennoo explained that levies would be collected to maintain and manage the facility. Others raised concerns about relocating from existing lockable shops to open sheds.
MP Enu and the MCE assured traders that their concerns would be factored into planning, though some temporary adjustments might be necessary. Yam and vegetable seller Georgina Kusi praised the initiative but requested sufficient notice to relocate safely.
The assembly emphasized that the redevelopment aims to create a modern, accessible, and secure market environment to benefit both traders and shoppers, signaling a significant upgrade for the Tema Community Two commercial area.
