Ghana is set to introduce a free visa regime for all African nationals as part of a broader strategy to enhance intra-African trade, tourism, and regional integration.
President John Dramani Mahama announced that the policy will take effect on May 25, 2026, to coincide with Africa Day celebrations. The initiative will allow Africans travelling to Ghana to obtain e-visas online at no cost.
Speaking during a state visit by Zimbabwe’s President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, President Mahama explained that the move forms part of efforts to position Ghana as a leading hub for Pan-African cooperation and economic activity.
He noted that the visa-free entry policy would be integrated into a new e-visa system scheduled for rollout in the coming month, aimed at simplifying travel procedures and improving accessibility.
Highlighting existing relations, President Mahama pointed out that Ghana and Zimbabwe already enjoy a visa-free travel arrangement, allowing citizens of both countries to move freely without visa requirements.
Beyond the visa policy, the President revealed that Ghana and Zimbabwe had signed 10 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to deepen bilateral cooperation across various sectors.
He further indicated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would continue pursuing additional visa waiver agreements to expand travel opportunities for Ghanaian passport holders.
The policy is expected to strengthen Ghana’s role in advancing continental integration while creating new opportunities for business, tourism, and cultural exchange across Africa.
