More than 40 officers of the Winneba Local Prisons Service Directorate have voluntarily donated blood to support the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba, as part of efforts to boost the facility’s blood reserves for emergency cases.
The exercise, organised in partnership with the hospital’s Blood Unit, also included health screening for officers of the Service.
According to ASP James Mensah, Public Relations Officer of the Winneba Prisons, the initiative was motivated by the growing demand for blood at the hospital, which serves as a major referral centre for accident and emergency cases.
He explained that the hospital recorded about 3,000 accident cases last year, with nearly half of those patients requiring blood transfusions, placing considerable pressure on the blood bank.
ASP Mensah said the Prisons Service decided to step in as part of its social responsibility and long-standing relationship with the hospital.
Officials of the Trauma and Specialist Hospital expressed appreciation for the support, noting that the donated blood would help save lives, particularly those of accident victims, expectant mothers, anaemia patients and people undergoing surgery.
The hospital also appealed to other institutions and members of the public to support regular blood donation drives to help maintain adequate reserves for emergencies.
