In a major step toward expanding healthcare access, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) is rolling out a large-scale initiative to enroll one million residents in the National Health Insurance Scheme at no cost across the Ashanti Region.
The month-long exercise, slated for May 2026, is designed not only to boost active membership but also to close gaps in healthcare coverage, particularly among underserved populations.
NHIA officials say the outreach will remove financial barriers that often prevent individuals from registering or renewing their membership, enabling more people to access essential health services.
The programme, themed “The King’s Month,” also coincides with celebrations marking the birthday of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, whose leadership has been widely associated with development initiatives in the region.
During a visit to the Manhyia Palace, NHIA executives, led by Board Chairman Lawrence Nii Okantey Adjetey and CEO Victor Asare Bampoe, outlined the broader vision behind the campaign—strengthening public health systems through wider insurance participation.
The Authority believes the initiative will significantly improve healthcare outcomes by increasing the number of insured residents who can seek timely medical care without financial strain.
With preparations underway, NHIA says detailed information on registration centres and schedules will be released ahead of the May rollout, as it works to deliver one of the region’s largest health insurance enrollment drives in recent years.
