Ghana’s leading referral facility, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, is reporting improved clinical performance alongside renewed investment in research and innovation to sustain quality tertiary healthcare.
At its 2025 End-of-Year Performance Review Conference in Kumasi, Chief Executive Officer Paa Kwesi Baidoo highlighted measurable gains in patient care, even as the hospital navigated operational challenges, including industrial action by nurses.
Key performance indicators showed notable improvements, with institutional deaths declining by 16 per cent. Emergency cases exceeded expectations, reaching 26,581 against a target of 25,000, while surgeries rose by six per cent to 18,380 procedures. Outpatient attendance also surpassed projections, recording over 284,000 visits.
Dr. Baidoo attributed the gains to a combination of improved clinical systems, expanded infrastructure, and a deliberate focus on evidence-based care. He revealed that the hospital has committed GH¢100,000 annually to operational research, positioning scientific inquiry as a core driver of patient outcomes.
Among ongoing projects is a modern cardiac centre expected to boost advanced diagnostics and interventions, alongside an Assisted Reproductive Technology facility and a hostel for patients’ relatives to improve overall care experience. Upgrades to roads, walkways, and medical equipment are also underway to enhance safety and efficiency.
The hospital is further extending its impact beyond its walls through clinical mentorship programmes in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service, aimed at strengthening specialist care delivery across the region.
Meanwhile, David Asamoah of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology underscored the importance of research partnerships in advancing healthcare, noting that collaboration between academia and clinical institutions remains key to addressing emerging health challenges.
With a dual focus on performance and innovation, KATH is positioning itself to meet growing healthcare demands while reinforcing its role as a centre of excellence in Ghana’s medical landscape.
