The Ministry of Transport has begun a market-sounding exercise to attract strategic investors for the establishment of a new national airline, marking a fresh push to reintroduce a flag carrier based in Accra.
In a statement issued on April 28, 2026, Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe (MP) said the initiative forms part of government’s plan to develop a commercially sustainable airline positioned to serve both regional and intercontinental routes, with Accra as its operational hub.
According to the Ministry, the process will be conducted in three stages of engagement with interested partners, as government seeks a technically strong and financially viable aviation partner.
To qualify, applicants must be established airlines, subsidiaries of operating carriers, or consortia backed by recognised airline operators. They are expected to demonstrate strong operational capacity, including airline management expertise, route development experience, regulatory compliance, and financial stability supported by a credible business plan aligned with government’s objectives.
The Ministry indicated that the preferred structure would involve a joint venture arrangement, with the selected strategic partner holding a majority equity stake in the new airline entity.
Under the proposed model, the airline is expected to operate multiple service segments, including a full-service carrier designed to handle long-haul international routes connecting Ghana to Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia.
The initiative is part of broader efforts to position Ghana as a competitive aviation hub in West Africa, improve connectivity, and stimulate economic activity through increased air transport services.
