Government Strengthens Security Measures to Support 24-Hour Economy

Government has decided to bolster security and support Ghana’s transition to a 24-hour economy. With this, the Ministry of the Interior has announced the establishment of a dedicated secretariat to oversee policing strategies for round-the-clock economic activities.

The initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to ensuring a safe and competitive business environment across the country.

Speaking at a Regional Police Commanders’ Conference in Accra, Minister of the Interior, Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, emphasized the importance of implementing a dynamic and responsive policing system.

He noted that economic activities do not cease, whether in urban centers or rural communities, and therefore, security operations must evolve to meet the demands of a 24-hour economy.

“We are laying the groundwork for a security system that guarantees safety for businesses, workers, and citizens at all times. This initiative will be crucial in crime prevention and the protection of economic assets nationwide,” the Minister stated.

He further reassured the public of the Ghana Police Service’s commitment to ensuring an efficient, accessible, and responsive security system, highlighting a three-day orientation program for all regional and unit police public relations officers.

The program aims to enhance officers’ ability to engage with communities, share crucial security information, and reinforce public trust in law enforcement.

Addressing concerns regarding police involvement in private security assignments, Alhaji Muntaka called for stronger oversight, questioning the deployment of police personnel to protect private individuals and businesses without clear regulatory frameworks. He urged the police administration to implement measures that ensure transparency and accountability in such assignments.

“You see officers protecting private individuals in their homes and escorting them through the city. What checks are in place to regulate these activities? We must develop measures to streamline this practice,” he stated.

The Minister revealed that he had formally requested a report from the Inspector-General of Police on private individuals receiving police protection. He also raised concerns about cash-in-transit security, emphasizing the need for stricter regulations on police-escorted cash transport vehicles.

He further disclosed that since assuming office, his ministry had overseen the deportation of over 107 foreign nationals involved in fraudulent activities and illegal mining.

He instructed regional police commanders to strengthen collaboration with immigration officials to ensure the swift repatriation of foreign nationals engaged in criminal activities.

Additionally, Alhaji Muntaka proposed mandatory firearm training for individuals applying for gun licenses, advocating for a policy that requires applicants to complete certified training before obtaining a firearm.

Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, reaffirmed the police administration’s commitment to combating violent crime and ensuring perpetrators face the full force of the law.

He commended police officers for their dedication and sacrifices, stressing the need for continuous innovation in response to evolving security challenges.

“Security is not just about visibility—it must be felt. Our duty is only fulfilled when Ghanaians feel safe and confident in the protection we provide,” Mr. Yohuno stated.

He urged police personnel to remain vigilant and work collaboratively with stakeholders to enhance Ghana’s security landscape, reinforcing the government’s pledge to maintain a safe and conducive environment for economic activities.
