TUC Sounds Alarm Over Galamsey Threat

… Urges National Emergency Response to Protect Jobs and Environment

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has renewed its call for decisive national action against illegal mining, warning that Ghana’s environmental and economic stability is at risk if galamsey activities are not urgently brought under control.

TUC Chairman Bernard Owusu raised the concern during the 2026 May Day celebrations held at Jackson’s Park in Koforidua on Friday, May 1, 2026. The event brought together workers, labour leaders, government officials and representatives of state institutions, with President John Dramani Mahama in attendance.

Mr Owusu described illegal mining as a persistent national challenge that continues to undermine development efforts despite years of interventions and policy responses.

He cautioned that ongoing destruction of water bodies and land resources could have far-reaching consequences for employment, agriculture, and industrial growth, ultimately worsening the living conditions of workers.

According to him, stronger enforcement and a unified national response are needed to reverse the trend and safeguard Ghana’s future.

Reiterating the TUC’s position, he said the labour movement remains firmly opposed to illegal mining due to its impact on livelihoods and the wider economy.

“The issue of galamsey still remains a menace and must stop now. Despite ongoing reforms, we are losing this fight and we cannot afford to lose our future. When rivers die, industries, agriculture, investment and jobs all decline leaving the Ghanaian worker to bear the cost. This is why our stance on galamsey remains uncompromised,” he stressed.

The TUC maintained that protecting natural resources is directly linked to securing jobs and ensuring sustainable national development.
