The Minister of Education, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, has assured public universities of the government’s commitment to granting them full autonomy, reinforcing their independence in governance and operations.
Speaking at the Second Session of the Third Congregation of the University of Media, Arts, and Communication (UniMAC) in Accra on Friday, March 21, 2025, Mr. Iddrisu emphasized that the administration of President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang prioritizes university governance and research funding as key pillars of higher education reform.
He underscored the significance of empowering university councils and management to function without political or bureaucratic interference, highlighting Vice President Opoku-Agyemang’s background as a former vice-chancellor as a testament to the government’s deep understanding of academic administration.
In addition to bolstering university autonomy, Mr. Iddrisu announced the imminent operationalization of the National Research Fund, aimed at promoting research excellence and innovation. The fund, he revealed, will receive initial seed money from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to ensure a sustainable framework for academic research and development.
With these initiatives, the government aims to enhance the quality of higher education in Ghana, positioning universities to drive national progress through academic freedom and research-driven solutions.
