GNA to Drive Awareness Campaign as China’s Zero-Tariff Policy Opens New Trade Path for Ghana

The General Manager of the Ghana News Agency, Mr Albert Kofi Owusu, has announced a comprehensive multimedia campaign to help Ghanaian businesses and citizens better understand and take advantage of China’s expanded zero-tariff trade policy.

The initiative will include articles, infographics, videos, and podcasts aimed at explaining the practical benefits of the policy for exporters, manufacturers, and small and medium-sized enterprises in Ghana.

Mr Owusu made the announcement in an interview with China’s China Global Television Network, describing the policy as a major opportunity for Ghana’s trade expansion, industrial growth, and economic diversification.

Under the policy, China has extended duty-free access to 53 African countries, including Ghana, with implementation running from May 1, 2026 to April 30, 2028. Only Eswatini is excluded due to its diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

China, Africa’s largest trading partner, recorded bilateral trade of about US$348 billion in 2025. The new arrangement is expected to boost exports, improve competitiveness, and encourage African countries to shift from raw material exports to value-added production.

Mr Owusu said the GNA campaign would simplify the policy for businesses by breaking down compliance requirements, quality standards, and market access procedures, while also highlighting success stories of Ghanaian exporters.

He added that the agency will also organise workshops and engage policymakers to ensure exporters and entrepreneurs can make informed decisions.

Priority export sectors identified include cocoa derivatives, shea products, cashew, timber, and light manufacturing, which he said could benefit significantly from improved access to the Chinese market.

According to him, the policy aligns with broader continental goals, including industrialisation and job creation under the African Continental Free Trade Area (African Continental Free Trade Area).

Mr Owusu also urged African media organisations to adopt data-driven reporting and strengthen collaboration to ensure accurate coverage of China-Africa trade relations, noting that balanced narratives are essential for development-focused journalism.

He further highlighted Chinese investments in Ghana’s power, aviation, and manufacturing sectors as evidence of deepening economic ties that should be widely communicated.

The GNA boss reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to providing credible and timely information to support national development and economic transformation.
