Cheaper Loans Still Elusive Despite Drop in Ghana Reference Rate

Borrowers may have to wait longer for meaningful relief, even as Ghana’s benchmark lending rate continues its downward trend.

The Ghana Association of Banks has announced a slight decline in the Ghana Reference Rate (GRR) to 10.03 percent for May 2026, down marginally from 10.06 percent in April.

The new rate, which takes effect on May 6, extends a steady decline in benchmark borrowing indicators after sharper reductions recorded earlier this year.

Although the latest drop is minimal, it signals growing confidence in Ghana’s macroeconomic recovery and improving financial stability.

The GRR, which serves as the base rate for pricing loans across the banking sector, is calculated using a weighted formula based on Treasury bill rates, the average interbank lending rate, and the Bank of Ghana’s Monetary Policy Rate.

Recent figures released by the Ghana Association of Banks show the reference rate has fallen significantly over the past few months — dropping from 14.58 percent in February to 11.71 percent in March, before declining further to 10.06 percent in April and now 10.03 percent in May.

Despite the consistent decline, analysts say businesses and households should not expect immediate cuts in lending rates from commercial banks.

This is because actual loan pricing is influenced by other factors, including borrower risk levels, banks’ operational costs, and internal credit assessment models.

Financial experts believe the downward trend could eventually improve access to credit, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises, and help stimulate private sector growth.

For now, however, banks are expected to move cautiously, with any reduction in loan rates likely to happen gradually as institutions respond to changing market conditions.
