‘Do Better’: Pearl Asiamah Criticises Basintale Over ‘Air Ghana’ Claims, DC-10 Controversy

A Ghanaian commentator, Pearl Asiamah, has criticised the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency, Malik Basintale, over what she describes as misleading public commentary surrounding the “Air Ghana” narrative and the history of the defunct Ghana Airways DC-10 aircraft.

In an open letter addressed to Basintale, Asiamah questioned his recent social media remarks, arguing that his tone and approach—effective during his days as a political communicator—are no longer appropriate given his current public office.

Her criticism follows online debates sparked by Basintale’s post celebrating an air freighter branded “Air Ghana,” which he reportedly linked to government efforts. The post drew backlash and generated widespread social media reactions, including memes and political commentary.

Asiamah further challenged Basintale’s claims about the Ghana Airways DC-10, insisting that the aircraft was converted into a restaurant in 2013—not after 2016 as he had suggested. She referenced a 2013 report by Graphic Online, noting that the facility, known as La Tante DC-10, was inaugurated during the tenure of former Transport Minister Dzifa Aku Attivor under the administration of John Dramani Mahama.

Providing historical context, Asiamah traced the long-standing challenges of Ghana Airways, highlighting financial struggles, management issues, and eventual collapse in 2005. She argued that the repurposing of the aircraft into a restaurant was a pragmatic decision aimed at salvaging value and boosting tourism after years of decline.

The commentary also revisited the short-lived successor, Ghana International Airlines, which ceased operations in 2010.

Asiamah concluded by urging Basintale to exercise greater caution in his public communications, stressing that his statements now reflect not only personal views but also on the government he serves.

The remarks add to ongoing public discourse over political communication, historical accountability, and the role of public officials in shaping narratives on national issues.
