Ghana’s 15-Month Inflation Decline Ends as Prices Edge Up in April

Ghana’s inflation rate has recorded its first increase in more than a year, bringing an end to a 15-month streak of declining prices, according to new figures released by the Ghana Statistical Service.
The country’s year-on-year inflation rose to 3.4 per cent in April 2026, up slightly from 3.2 per cent recorded in March, representing a 0.2 percentage point increase.
Despite the rise, inflation remains significantly lower compared to the 21.2 per cent recorded in April 2025.
Addressing a press conference in Accra, Government Statistician Dr Alhassan Iddrisu said the Consumer Price Index increased from 258.6 in April 2025 to 267.3 in April 2026.
He explained that the latest increase was largely driven by rising costs in housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, as well as food, education, and accommodation services.
Items that contributed most to inflation included charcoal, rent, river fish, smoked herrings, and school fees at both the secondary and primary levels.
Other contributors were green plantain, ginger, cooked rice, and hotel accommodation.
Regionally, Greater Accra Region accounted for the largest share of overall inflation at 37.3 per cent, followed by Ashanti Region and the Eastern Region.
The North East Region recorded the highest regional inflation rate at 9.5 per cent, while the Savannah Region posted the lowest rate at negative 3.5 per cent.
Food inflation declined marginally to 2.2 per cent, while non-food inflation rose to 4.2 per cent.
The report also showed inflation for locally produced goods easing slightly, while prices of imported goods increased after recording negative growth in March.
The latest figures signal a possible shift in Ghana’s inflation trend after more than a year of steady decline.
