The Krowor Municipal Education Directorate has rolled out an aggressive academic support programme aimed at improving student performance in the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Dubbed Project 2026, the initiative is designed to identify high-performing students, provide intensive coaching and create healthy academic competition among Junior High School learners across the municipality.
Azeriya Ayeriga said the programme also ensures struggling students receive extra academic support to improve overall learning outcomes.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, he explained that the intervention combines student selection, mentorship and rigorous academic preparation.
The programme began in 2025 with a pilot phase involving 10 pupils from public schools.
According to him, the initial results were encouraging, with two students excelling in the BECE—one earning seven grade ones and another securing six grade ones.
Following that success, the directorate expanded the programme in 2026 to include both public and private schools.
Under the expanded initiative, 14 public junior high schools selected their top 20 students through internal assessments, while more than 30 private schools were invited to nominate five top-performing students each.
More than 500 students participated in the selection process, with the top 30 eventually chosen for specialised coaching.
The final group consists of 20 students from public schools and 10 from private institutions.
Since October 2025, the selected students have attended intensive academic sessions every Friday at the education directorate.
Mr Ayeriga revealed that he personally joins teaching sessions to help improve outcomes.
He also urged schools to provide additional support for below-average learners to ensure broader academic improvement across the municipality.
He commended Paul Affortey Quaye, Naa Momo Lartey and other stakeholders for supporting the programme.
Education leaders, parents and teachers have praised the initiative, calling for increased funding to expand its reach and improve results across the municipality.
