The Ghana National Fire Service has raised alarm over increasing attacks on firefighters and the destruction of emergency equipment during rescue operations.
Ebenezer Yenzu said the growing hostility from some members of the public is undermining firefighters’ ability to save lives and protect property during emergencies.
He made the remarks after legal action was initiated at the Ashaiman District Court over an alleged assault on firefighters responding to a distress call in the Ashaiman-Katamanso-Newland area.
According to him, senior officials of the Fire Service, including the regional commander, attended the court proceedings to show support for affected officers and send a strong message that attacks on emergency responders will not be tolerated.
He disclosed that although the case was filed, the suspect failed to appear in court, prompting the court to issue a bench warrant for his arrest.
DO II Yenzu said similar incidents have also been recorded in other parts of the country, including Madina, where a firefighter was reportedly stabbed, as well as in Kasoa and Konongo.
He explained that this year’s International Firefighters Day theme, “Stop the Attacks on Firefighters and Their Equipment,” was selected to draw attention to the growing threat.
He urged the public to cooperate with firefighters during emergencies rather than obstructing or attacking them.
“Firefighters respond because communities call for help. They are there to save lives,” he stressed.
