Ghana Meteorological Agency Adopts Inclusive Weather Communication for Persons with Disabilities

Accra, Ghana – In a significant move towards accessibility and inclusivity, the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has begun translating meteorological information into formats tailored for persons with disabilities. This initiative aims to ensure that all citizens, regardless of their physical abilities, have access to critical weather updates and early warnings.

Under the new system, daily weather forecasts will be adapted into large print for individuals with low vision, braille for the blind, audio formats for those with visual impairments, sign language for the deaf or hard of hearing, and simplified language for individuals with cognitive disabilities.

Speaking at a forum marking this year’s World Meteorological Day (WMD) on March 23, Mr. Samuel Nartey George, Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, emphasized the importance of inclusive communication. He stated that ensuring persons with disabilities have access to meteorological information is a fundamental right and a critical step in safeguarding their well-being.

“In the face of increasing climate threats and extreme weather events, it is crucial that no one is left behind. The Ghana Meteorological Agency’s initiative highlights the need for accessibility in early warning systems, empowering all individuals to make informed decisions to protect themselves and their communities,” he said.

The theme for World Meteorological Day 2025, “Closing the Early Warning Gap Together,” underscores the need for collaborative efforts in building resilience against climate change.

Dr. Eric Asuman, Director General of GMet, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to inclusivity, explaining that persons with disabilities are often among the most vulnerable during climate crises, including floods, droughts, and storms.

“Our engagement with the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) is designed to assess their specific needs and co-create accessible content that will be delivered through appropriate channels,” Dr. Asuman said. “In other countries, persons with disabilities already have access to these vital weather services, and it is time we prioritize this in Ghana as well.”

Mr. Joseph Atsu Homadzi, President of GFD, welcomed the initiative, highlighting the struggles that persons with disabilities face in accessing crucial weather updates.

“How does a deaf or blind person receive weather alerts?” he questioned. “This initiative will help bridge the information gap and improve our ability to respond to climate-related challenges.”

The government has pledged its support for expanding early warning systems and enhancing climate adaptation measures. According to Mr. George, initiatives such as the e-Transform and Ghana Digital Acceleration Projects have been instrumental in improving communication infrastructure and disaster preparedness.

As Ghana faces increasing climate variability, this groundbreaking initiative by GMet represents a step forward in ensuring that all citizens, regardless of their physical abilities, can access life-saving weather information. The project is expected to improve disaster preparedness, enhance community resilience, and promote inclusive development across the country.
