Alcohol-Free Beer Emerges as Surprising Source of Brain-Boosting Vitamin B6 — Study

A new scientific study has found that alcohol-free beer may provide significant amounts of vitamin B6, an essential nutrient linked to brain health, immunity and blood function, without the health risks associated with alcohol consumption.

The research, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, analysed 65 commercially available German beers and discovered that many beer varieties contained far higher levels of vitamin B6 than previously estimated.

According to the study, a standard serving of beer could supply about 15 per cent of a person’s daily vitamin B6 requirement, while some alcohol-free lagers performed even better.

Researchers found that vitamin B6 levels ranged from 95 to more than 1,000 micrograms per litre depending on the beer type, with barley-based beers recording the highest concentrations.

Bock beers, known for their rich malt content, contained the largest amounts, averaging about 808 micrograms per litre, while standard lagers averaged 515 micrograms. Wheat and rice beers recorded the lowest levels.

The researchers explained that the type of raw material used in brewing played a more important role in vitamin B6 content than the brewing process itself.

Barley, the study noted, contains nearly four times more vitamin B6 than rice, making barley-based beers significantly richer in the nutrient.

One of the key findings was that removing alcohol from beer did not significantly reduce its vitamin B6 content.

Some alcohol-free lagers contained up to 761 micrograms per litre, enough for a 500ml bottle to provide nearly a quarter of the recommended daily vitamin B6 intake for women.

The study said alcohol-free beers produced through full fermentation followed by alcohol removal techniques such as vacuum distillation or membrane filtration appeared to retain particularly high vitamin B6 levels.

Vitamin B6 is essential because the human body cannot produce it naturally. Deficiency has been associated with depression, inflammation, cardiovascular disease and weakened immune function.

Researchers noted that vitamin B6 deficiency may be more common than many people realise, affecting about one in five European teenagers and roughly one in ten Americans.

Despite the nutritional findings, the study also acknowledged the health dangers associated with alcohol consumption.

The World Health Organization (WHO) maintains that there is no completely safe level of alcohol intake and classifies alcohol as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning it is known to cause cancer in humans.

Other studies referenced in the report linked higher alcohol consumption to increased risks of dementia, liver disease, heart problems and changes in brain structure associated with memory loss.

Stephen Burgess said evidence increasingly suggested that greater alcohol consumption raised dementia risk.

Researchers stressed that beer should not be considered the primary source of vitamin B6, noting that the nutrient is also widely available in healthier everyday foods such as fish, potatoes, legumes, peanuts, soya beans, fortified cereals and non-citrus fruits.
