MTN and Vodacom Race Past $1 Trillion in Mobile Money, but Split on Strategy

Africa’s two largest telecom-backed fintech giants, MTN Group and Vodacom Group, have jointly crossed a major financial milestone, processing more than $1 trillion in mobile money transactions in their latest financial years.

Despite the shared scale, the companies are increasingly diverging in strategy, product focus and market approach as competition intensifies across Africa’s fast-growing digital finance ecosystem.

Vodacom edged ahead on financial services revenue, reporting a 19.6% rise to R16.8 billion for the year ending March 2026. When Safaricom—where Vodacom holds a significant stake—is fully consolidated, the group’s fintech revenue base expands substantially, highlighting its reliance on a concentrated but high-performing East African footprint.

However, Vodacom’s expansion plans in Kenya remain uncertain, as a court challenge has temporarily stalled its bid to increase its stake in Safaricom through a government share sale.

MTN, meanwhile, reported R30.3 billion in fintech revenue for the year ending December 2025, marking strong growth of 23.2% in constant currency. Its mobile money platform, MoMo, processed $500.3 billion in transactions, driven by expansion across 16 markets and a rapidly growing user base of 69.5 million monthly active customers.

Vodacom and Safaricom together processed $525.6 billion, meaning the two telco ecosystems collectively moved slightly over $1 trillion in mobile money flows—underscoring their dominant role in Africa’s digital financial infrastructure.

Beyond headline figures, the two operators are increasingly taking different paths to growth. MTN is building a broader fintech ecosystem across multiple markets, including lending, virtual cards and partnerships aimed at deepening financial services penetration.

Vodacom, by contrast, is doubling down on its “depth-over-breadth” strategy, anchored by Safaricom’s dominant position in Kenya, where mobile money services like M-Pesa continue to expand into lending, savings and merchant payments.

Both groups now face emerging competition from fintech specialists and alternative payment technologies, including AI-driven lenders and the rising interest in stablecoins across African markets.

With over a trillion dollars in annual transactions flowing through their platforms, the central question for the sector is no longer scale—but which strategy will deliver sustainable dominance in Africa’s evolving digital financial landscape.
