University of Ghana Goes Digital to Reconnect Thousands of Alumni Worldwide

The University of Ghana has unveiled a new mobile application designed to transform alumni engagement by connecting thousands of graduates across the globe through a single digital platform.

The University of Ghana Alumni Network (UGA) app is expected to revolutionise how former students interact with the institution and each other by facilitating professional networking, mentorship, collaboration and lifelong engagement.

Developed in-house by the University’s Information Technology Directorate, the application reflects the institution’s growing emphasis on leveraging technology and internal expertise to strengthen relationships with its global alumni community.

Launched at the West African Genetic Medicine Centre, the platform is part of a broader strategy to harness the knowledge, experience and influence of alumni to support the University’s teaching, research and innovation agenda.

Speaking at the event, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, described the launch as a major milestone in the institution’s efforts to build stronger and more meaningful connections with graduates worldwide.

She noted that alumni remain one of the University’s most valuable assets, serving as mentors, ambassadors, partners and contributors to its continued growth and development.

“Our alumni are the mentors our students need before they leave campus. They are the ambassadors who validate in the real world the education the University provides,” she said.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the app will allow alumni to register and verify their credentials while connecting with former classmates, professional groups and year cohorts regardless of their location.

The platform is also expected to create new opportunities for mentorship by linking experienced professionals with students and recent graduates seeking career guidance and industry connections.

Additional features include searchable alumni directories, event registration tools and targeted communication channels aimed at promoting collaboration, knowledge-sharing and institutional engagement.

Professor Appiah Amfo observed that alumni engagement had previously relied heavily on informal platforms such as social media and WhatsApp groups, making coordination and data management difficult.

She said the new application provides a structured and verified system that will help maintain stronger and more sustainable connections between the University and its graduates.

Professor Gordon Abekah-Nkrumah, Director of the Institutional Advancement Directorate, described the initiative as the beginning of a new era in alumni relations.

He said the app was more than a technological innovation, serving as a strategic tool to strengthen a lifelong relationship between alumni and their alma mater.

“For many years, alumni engagement has been pursued through fragmented efforts. Today, we are laying the foundation for a more connected, coordinated and vibrant alumni ecosystem,” he said.

Prof Abekah-Nkrumah added that the platform would support key activities including mentorship programmes, networking opportunities, fundraising initiatives, institutional communication and alumni data management.

He encouraged graduates of the University to actively join the platform, reconnect with former colleagues and contribute to the institution’s future growth and development.

University officials indicated that the application will continue to be enhanced based on user feedback, with additional features expected to be introduced to improve functionality and deepen alumni engagement over time.
