Ghana to Host Hyundai Plant as South Korea Deepens Industrial Partnership

Ghana is set to host a Hyundai automotive manufacturing plant as South Korea strengthens its investment footprint in Africa, a move expected to boost industrial growth and support Ghana’s ambitions to become a regional manufacturing hub.

The development was announced by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, following the 2026 Korea–Africa Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Seoul, which he co-chaired with South Korea’s Foreign Minister, Cho Hyun.

Mr Ablakwa said the planned West Africa–serving Hyundai facility will increase local vehicle production, create jobs, and attract further investment into Ghana’s expanding industrial sector.

He also revealed that both countries will collaborate on additional projects, including the establishment of a new university in Ghana and the rollout of solar-powered irrigation systems.

The automotive plant is being positioned as a key step in Ghana’s broader strategy to shift from raw material exports to value-added industrial production.

Beyond manufacturing, Ghana and South Korea have agreed to expand cooperation in areas such as artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and critical minerals, which are central to emerging global economic and technological shifts.

According to Mr Ablakwa, the partnership discussions focused on industrialisation, job creation, and improving Africa’s returns from global trade and investment systems, with special attention to youth employment.

South Korea’s rapid industrial transformation continues to make it a strategic partner for African countries seeking technology transfer and manufacturing development.

The two countries are also advancing talks on visa facilitation, including efforts to extend existing visa-free arrangements for diplomatic and service passport holders to other categories.

The agreements come as Ghana and South Korea prepare to mark 50 years of diplomatic relations, with the Hyundai project expected to stand out as a major milestone in their growing economic partnership.
