Ghana Steps Up Ocean Protection Efforts as Govt Marks World Oceans Day 2026

Ghana has used World Oceans Day 2026 to highlight renewed efforts to strengthen marine conservation, improve fisheries governance, and protect the country’s ocean resources from environmental degradation and overexploitation.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture, in a statement commemorating the day, emphasised the central role of the ocean in supporting food security, employment, and economic development, particularly for coastal communities.

It stressed that sustainable management of marine resources has become increasingly urgent amid growing threats from pollution, climate change, and illegal fishing practices.

Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mrs Emelia Arthur, described the ocean as a vital natural asset that underpins livelihoods for millions of Ghanaians, especially those engaged in fishing and related activities.

She called for stronger collective action to ensure the long-term protection of marine ecosystems, noting that responsible stewardship is essential to securing future generations’ access to marine resources.

“Our oceans are the lifeblood of our planet. In Ghana, they provide food security, employment, and cultural heritage for millions. We must act with urgency and responsibility to protect them,” she said.

The Minister reaffirmed government’s commitment to enhancing transparency, innovation, and resilience within the fisheries sector as part of broader reforms aimed at sustainable ocean governance.

She noted that ongoing collaborations with local communities, regional partners, and international organisations are helping Ghana intensify the fight against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing while strengthening aquaculture development.

According to her, improved enforcement of conservation measures remains a key priority for safeguarding marine biodiversity and restoring declining fish stocks.

Mrs Arthur also pointed to Ghana’s recent establishment of its first Marine Protected Area at Greater Cape Three Points in the Western Region, describing it as a significant milestone in national conservation efforts.

She said the initiative represents a major step toward protecting critical marine habitats and reinforcing sustainable fisheries management in the country.

The Ministry further noted that World Oceans Day serves as an important reminder of the need for shared responsibility in protecting the oceans, urging government institutions, civil society, fishing communities, and citizens to play active roles in conservation efforts.

It called for continued collaboration to ensure the sustainable use of marine resources and the preservation of ocean ecosystems for both present and future generations.
