Labour Unrest Could Deter Investors, National Labour Commission Warns

Concerns are mounting that rising labour disputes and workplace disruptions in Ghana could weaken the country’s attractiveness to foreign investors, as stakeholders push for stronger dialogue and more stable industrial relations.

At the 2026 Chartered Institute of Human Resource Management Ghana Conference in Accra, the Deputy Chairperson of the National Labour Commission (NLC), Rose Karikari Anang, cautioned that industrial unrest is increasingly influencing investment decisions globally.

She noted that investors assess not only economic indicators but also the stability of labour environments before committing capital to any country.

“What is happening elsewhere? How are they managing it? Sometimes you look at what is working. Can it work for us? If it can work, because you see, the investors are looking at the labour markets. They are looking at the industrialisation environment,” she said.

Madam Anang warned that frequent strikes and labour agitations in key sectors such as education and the public service could create negative perceptions about Ghana’s business climate.

“People are in arms, public universities, public sector, the teachers’ union. What is happening? Why do I invest in a country where every time some strike is going on?” she queried.

She stressed that industrial harmony is now a critical economic factor, as global investors increasingly prioritise stability and predictability when choosing destinations for investment.

According to her, Ghana must urgently strengthen mechanisms for dialogue between employers and labour groups, while adopting practical and globally aligned approaches to managing workplace disputes.

She also called for a shift in mindset among stakeholders, urging greater focus on national interest and long-term productivity rather than recurring confrontations.

The conference, themed “Advancing Human Resource Excellence in Ghana: Leadership, Technology and Governance,” brought together human resource professionals, policymakers and industry leaders to explore strategies for improving the future of work and strengthening labour systems.
