The government has announced that all outstanding payments owed to the contractor working on the Tema Motorway project have been fully settled, paving the way for accelerated construction on one of Ghana’s most important transport corridors.
Minister for Roads and Highways, Mr. Kwame Governs Agbodza, made the disclosure on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, assuring lawmakers that financial constraints would no longer be an obstacle to the progress of the project.
According to the Minister, the government prioritised the settlement of all outstanding claims to ensure uninterrupted work and improve the pace of delivery.
“Mr. Speaker, on record, the Motorway contract is ongoing and as of this morning, we don’t owe the contractor any amount of money. All outstanding claims have been settled,” Mr. Agbodza told Parliament.
He noted that delayed payments have historically been a major challenge affecting infrastructure projects across the country, often resulting in slow progress and disruptions to construction schedules.
With the financial obligations now cleared, the Roads Minister called on the contractor to intensify activities on site and deliver visible progress within the shortest possible time.
“We will endeavour to continue to encourage the contractors to work on this project to hurry up,” he stated.
The Tema Motorway remains a critical component of Ghana’s transport network, serving as the main link between Accra and Tema while facilitating the movement of goods to and from the Tema Port. The corridor also plays a vital role in regional trade by connecting Ghana to neighbouring countries, including Togo.
Government officials believe that resolving the issue of contractor payments will help accelerate work on the project and contribute to improving traffic flow, trade efficiency and economic activity along one of the country’s busiest road networks.
