MoMo Transactions Surge by 64.68% in Early 2025: Analysts Predict Continued Growth

The mobile money sector in Ghana has experienced a significant boom in the first two months of 2025, with the total value of transactions reaching an impressive GH¢649.2 billion, marking a 64.68% year-on-year increase compared to the same period in 2024.

This growth comes despite recent changes in the regulatory landscape, including the abolishment of the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-levy) by the new government, which was expected to have a major impact on the sector. However, the numbers suggest that the mobile money space is resilient, continuing to thrive even in the wake of this policy shift.

While the overall growth is remarkable, the monthly figures for mobile money transactions show a mixed trend. In January 2025, the total value of transactions stood at GH¢333 billion, but this figure dipped to GH¢316.2 billion in February 2025. This slight decline raises questions about the future trajectory of the sector, even as analysts remain optimistic about long-term growth.

Despite the February drop, the year-on-year growth remains solid, and industry experts attribute this continued expansion to increased adoption of mobile financial services, particularly in rural areas where mobile money has become a vital financial tool.

One of the standout features of this growth is the increase in registered mobile money accounts, which has jumped from 66.9 million in the first two months of 2024 to an impressive 74.1 million in 2025. This surge indicates that mobile money is becoming increasingly mainstream, with more Ghanaians relying on the platform for various financial activities.

However, the number of active mobile money agents tells a more nuanced story. Although the total number of agents has risen to 896,000, the number of active agents currently stands at only 411,000. This gap suggests that while the mobile money network is expanding rapidly, there remains significant room for growth in agent activity and engagement, especially in underserved regions.

The rise in mobile money transactions also signals a promising future for Ghana’s financial technology (fintech) sector, which has been a key player in driving financial inclusion in the country. Analysts predict that mobile money will continue to bolster this sector, particularly as new fintech startups emerge to capitalize on the expanding digital payments ecosystem.

The move to abolish the E-levy is seen as a positive step by many in the fintech space, with hopes that it will remove a significant barrier to adoption and encourage even more people to embrace mobile financial services. As more Ghanaians flock to digital wallets for their financial needs, fintech companies are poised to capture a larger share of the market.

With the mobile money sector poised for continued growth, experts are optimistic about the potential of mobile-based financial services to drive economic empowerment. However, they also caution that the sector must evolve to meet the changing needs of users. The ongoing expansion of mobile internet infrastructure, along with the increasing availability of mobile banking options, will likely further stimulate the growth of mobile money in Ghana.

As mobile money becomes an integral part of the daily lives of Ghanaians, stakeholders in the fintech ecosystem will need to focus on improving access, enhancing security, and innovating new services to ensure that this growth is sustainable in the long term.

The next few months will be critical in determining whether mobile money can maintain its rapid growth trajectory, and how the sector will adapt to the changing regulatory environment and evolving consumer needs.
