Transport, Rent and Education Costs Drive Ghana’s Inflation Despite Lower Prices for Some Food Staples

Although prices of several staple food items have declined, rising costs in transport, housing and education continued to push Ghana’s inflation higher in June, underscoring the growing impact of service-related expenses on household budgets.

According to the latest data from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), headline inflation increased to 5.3 percent in June from 3.7 percent in May, marking the third consecutive monthly rise. However, the rate remains significantly lower than the 13.7 percent recorded in June 2025.

The data show that while improved harvests and better market supplies reduced prices for several key food crops, inflationary pressures remained concentrated in the services sector.

Transport fares emerged as the largest contributor to overall inflation, accounting for 10.5 percent of price increases, followed by rental costs at 8.4 percent and secondary school fees at 7.2 percent.

Government Statistician Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu said the current inflation trend is being driven largely by domestic cost pressures rather than imported goods.

Services inflation stood at 9.4 percent, substantially higher than goods inflation, which rose to 3.7 percent, reflecting persistent increases in the cost of essential services.

Within the food category, prices moved in different directions. Ginger recorded the highest year-on-year increase at 102.5 percent, while shrimps, mangoes, bananas, avocado pear, fresh coconut and palm fruits also registered significant price hikes.

In contrast, consumers benefited from lower prices for several staple crops, with kontomire recording a 38 percent decline. Garden eggs, maize, millet and beans also experienced double-digit price reductions due to improved harvests and stronger market supply.

The report further showed that locally produced goods remained the primary source of inflation, with domestic inflation rising to 6.7 percent from 5.0 percent in May and accounting for 86.6 percent of headline inflation. Imported inflation increased only modestly to 2.3 percent.

The latest figures suggest that while favourable agricultural production is helping to ease food prices, persistent increases in transport, housing and education costs continue to place pressure on household spending.

Analysts say sustaining Ghana’s disinflation trend will require not only improved agricultural output but also measures to address structural cost drivers within the services sector, where inflation remains most pronounced.
