The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations has directed Ghana Digital Centres Limited (GDCL) to immediately withdraw its decision to suspend the employment contracts of all staff following flood damage to its Accra facility.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 1, the Ministry described the directive as unacceptable and instructed management to reverse the decision with immediate effect.
“The Ministry takes a very strong view of the directive and immediately instructs Management to reverse that decision. All GDCL staff are to disregard the directive,” the statement said.
The intervention follows a circular issued by GDCL announcing the temporary suspension of all employment contracts from July 1 after severe flooding on June 29 disrupted operations and caused extensive damage to the technology hub.
The Ministry assured employees of its support, noting that the welfare of staff remains a priority, particularly as many had also been personally affected by the floods.
It further announced that GDCL’s management had been summoned to a meeting on Wednesday, July 2, to discuss the circumstances surrounding the directive and the way forward.
The meeting comes after the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, visited the facility on June 30 to assess the extent of damage caused by the floods to the centre and businesses operating within the complex.
Meanwhile, GDCL management has defended its earlier decision, explaining that the suspension of contracts was a temporary measure and did not amount to dismissals.
Deputy Chief Executive Officer Christine Adwoa Agyapomaa Ansong said the floods had rendered sections of the facility unsafe and significantly affected the centre’s revenue generation, adding that affected staff would be recalled once restoration works are completed and operations fully resume.
