A 19-year-old unemployed man has been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment with hard labour for breaking into a nurse’s room and stealing an iPhone XR and cash.
Shadrack Cobbinah was convicted by the Tarkwa District Magistrate Court One after pleading guilty to charges of unlawful entry and stealing.
Presiding Magistrate Bernice Mensimah Ackon convicted him on his own plea.
The court heard that the complainant, Bernice Xornam Beble, a nurse residing at Nkamponase, woke up at about 1:40 a.m. on May 16, 2026, and discovered that her door had been opened.
Her iPhone XR, valued at GH¢2,500, and GH¢5,700 in cash were reportedly missing from the room.
According to the prosecution, Cobbinah was later spotted offering the stolen iPhone for sale on the same day and was arrested and handed over to the police.
Police Sergeant Adwoa Yeboah, who prosecuted, told the court that GH¢3,000 was found on Cobbinah and retrieved at the police station.
She said the accused confessed during interrogation and mentioned one Michell, who is currently at large, as an alleged accomplice.
However, Sergeant Yeboah said Cobbinah told investigators that he had stolen only the iPhone and GH¢4,000, denying that he took the full GH¢5,700 reported by the complainant.
The court, after considering the facts and the accused’s plea, sentenced Cobbinah to five years in prison with hard labour.
