Ghana Moves to Standardise Treatment of Lead Poisoning as Child Exposure Concerns Grow

Ghana is taking steps to strengthen the health system’s response to lead exposure by developing its first national standard treatment guidelines for lead poisoning.

The guidelines are expected to provide health workers with clear protocols for diagnosing and treating lead poisoning while helping authorities determine the equipment and facilities needed at different levels of healthcare.

Dr Caesar Nyadedzor, Head of the Poison Control Unit of the Ghana Health Service, disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra.

He said the absence of standardised treatment protocols had made it difficult for health workers to determine the appropriate clinical response to lead exposure cases.

The challenge is further compounded by the limited availability of equipment for testing lead levels in public health facilities.

Dr Nyadedzor said the proposed guidelines would specify the tests required to identify and confirm lead poisoning, treatment options for different cases and the resources needed at facilities ranging from community-based health planning and services (CHPS) compounds to district and regional hospitals.

“If that guideline is not there, people may not be sure exactly what to do. It will help in knowing what kind of medications to offer to different people,” he said.

He said the guidelines would also serve as a planning tool for decision-makers to identify the equipment, facilities and other resources required to manage lead exposure effectively.

Dr Nyadedzor said the draft document had already undergone stakeholder validation, with participants providing additional comments for consideration.

A technical team is currently reviewing the submissions before the guidelines are forwarded for ministerial approval and subsequent formal launch.

He declined to give a specific timeline for the release of the guidelines, explaining that the process depended on ministerial approval and the completion of the formal launch arrangements.

The initiative comes amid growing concerns about lead exposure in Ghana, particularly from lead-based paint, contaminated water and food crops cultivated in mining communities.

A joint survey by the Ghana Health Service and UNICEF found that one in every two children under five in Ghana had blood lead levels above World Health Organisation limits.

Health experts have warned that no level of lead exposure is considered safe, with exposure capable of causing serious long-term health consequences, particularly among children.

These include brain damage, reduced intelligence, kidney disease and other lifelong complications.

The proposed guidelines are therefore expected to provide a more coordinated national framework for responding to lead poisoning and improve Ghana’s preparedness to prevent and manage exposure-related health risks.
