Dr. Bawumia Reflects on NPP’s 2024 Election Setback, Draws Inspiration from Kufuor’s Wisdom for Future Comeback

In a candid conversation with New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) on April 2, 2025, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s 2024 presidential candidate, reflected on the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections and shared a poignant piece of advice from former President John Agyekum Kufuor. Bawumia, who has since remained optimistic about the party’s future, recounted the words of Kufuor after the NPP’s loss in 1996, when the party secured only 39% of the vote.

Bawumia quoted Kufuor as saying, “In 1996, when we had 39%, I too wondered where to start from. But with unity and hard work, we crossed 50% in just four years.” Drawing from this, he expressed confidence that the NPP would make a strong comeback in the 2028 elections, pointing out that despite their loss in 2024, securing 41% was a sign of progress.

He stressed the importance of unity within the party, underlining that with a collective effort, Ghanaians would rally behind the NPP once more. “In unity and common purpose, we will rise again. We will come back to power in the 2028 elections,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia’s remarks also recognized the resilience and hard work of NPP MPs, particularly in the context of their minority status in the 9th Parliament. He commended them for their unwavering commitment, despite the challenges posed by being in opposition. “The party is grateful to you all for your tireless work,” he said, referencing the comparison often made between the current minority MPs and the pioneering minority led by the late J.H. Mensah during the second Parliament.

He also paid tribute to the backbenchers and first-time MPs, praising their exceptional performances that had sent positive ripples through Parliament. “You have qualitatively proven your worth,” Dr. Bawumia remarked. “This unity of purpose and understanding is what we need to win elections again.”

Further recognizing the leadership of Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo Markin, the Deputy Majority Leader, Dr. Bawumia referred to the current MPs as the “Mighty Minority of 88 Infantry Battalion,” a term that encapsulated their tenacity and ability to withstand difficult times.

Bawumia’s address was not just about political strategy, but also a heartfelt expression of gratitude. “I want to say thank you to you directly,” he told the MPs. “And through you, thank your constituencies for their tireless efforts in various ways during the election period.”

He added that the party would soon be embarking on a tour of constituencies to officially express appreciation for the support and hard work of their members, reaffirming the NPP’s commitment to staying united and connected with the grassroots.

Reflecting on the party’s tough journey, Bawumia acknowledged the challenges but emphasized that they were not in vain. “You were in the trenches with me and the party throughout the difficult moments of the campaign. I don’t take for granted the fact that you have stayed loyal to the NPP, and I am deeply appreciative of your efforts,” he concluded.

As the NPP looks ahead to the 2028 election cycle, Bawumia’s message was one of hope, unity, and hard work, with a focus on galvanizing party members and supporters for a victorious return to power.
