American-Ghanaian comedian Michael Blackson has publicly criticised the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), accusing the hospital of poor communication during his mother’s treatment before her death.
In a lengthy post on X, the comedian alleged that the hospital focused more on payment requests than providing his family with updates on his mother’s medical condition.
According to Blackson, his mother spent her final month at UGMC, where the family allegedly paid about GH¢250,000 for her treatment.
“University of Ghana Medical Centre called me every time payment was due, but the doctors never once called me to tell me how my mom was doing,” he wrote.
Blackson claimed that after weeks of treatment, the hospital informed the family that his mother had developed an infection and had died.
“In one month they collected about 250k cedis and then told me she caught an infection and died,” he stated.
He further alleged that the hospital initially contacted the family over an outstanding balance before explaining the cause of his mother’s condition.
The comedian also questioned the medical care his mother received, alleging that there were concerns about a possible misdiagnosis and the overall management of her treatment.
His comments have drawn attention on social media and sparked discussions about patient care, communication with families and accountability in Ghana’s healthcare system.
UGMC had not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of reporting.
