The Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) has declared its support for the “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration scheduled for August 6, describing the protest as a broader call to defend constitutional governance, democratic freedoms and the independence of state institutions.
In a statement, AFAG said the demonstration should not be viewed solely through a partisan lens, arguing that it raises concerns about the protection of civil liberties, the rule of law and the fair administration of justice.
According to the group, Ghana’s democracy is founded on the principles of freedom, justice, accountability and constitutionalism, and citizens have a legitimate right to demand that public institutions operate with fairness, independence and integrity.
AFAG stated that peaceful assembly is a constitutional right and remains an important mechanism through which citizens can express concerns about governance and accountability.
The organisation said it was supporting the demonstration because of what it described as growing concerns over democratic freedoms and constitutional rights.
Among the issues cited were the arrest and prosecution of citizens, journalists, activists and young people over expressions of opinion, as well as concerns about equal justice and due process in certain legal cases.
AFAG also raised concerns about judicial independence, restrictive bail conditions, the Tribunals Act, and what it described as increasing threats to freedom of expression and press freedom.
“These issues go beyond individuals; they speak to the kind of democracy we want to preserve, one where the Constitution is respected, institutions remain accountable, and citizens’ rights are protected,” the statement said.
The organisation called on Ghanaians to participate peacefully in the demonstration and reaffirm their commitment to constitutional governance, justice, accountability and the protection of democratic institutions.
AFAG further urged demonstrators to conduct themselves lawfully and responsibly, stressing that the strength of Ghana’s democracy depends on both active civic participation and a commitment to peace.
