TDC Ghana MD Calls for Transparency and Reform Amid Investigations into Past Activities

Mr. Courage Kafui Nunekpeku, the newly appointed Managing Director of TDC Ghana Limited, has announced sweeping internal reforms within the company, including a call for investigations into past practices. During a staff durbar, Mr. Nunekpeku outlined several issues uncovered during his extensive review of the company’s operations, with a focus on transparency, accountability, and financial integrity.

One of the most significant revelations was regarding the company’s IT department. Mr. Nunekpeku disclosed that contracts worth $1 million had been awarded for software, yet the company had no access to the product. This issue, among others, led him to request the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. He also mentioned that there were other issues he wished to remain confidential for now but promised further action in the near future.

The MD made it clear that his approach would be strict, urging staff who may have been involved in any unethical activities in the past to come forward voluntarily before the investigations uncovered their actions. He emphasized that anyone found guilty, regardless of their position in the company, would face the consequences, stating, “If we find out through investigations, I won’t accept any pleas.”

In his speech, Mr. Nunekpeku also unveiled plans for audits of the company’s land and property holdings. These audits are part of his broader initiative to ensure that TDC’s operations are properly managed and aligned with the company’s long-term goals.

Looking ahead, Mr. Nunekpeku reassured staff that the company would prioritize practical investments over lavish spending. In a departure from past practices, he announced that TDC would not purchase new vehicles for management but instead focus on acquiring more essential equipment like Urvan buses and construction vehicles, such as backhoes, dumpers, and tippers. These purchases, he said, were more directly beneficial to TDC’s mission and operations.

The MD’s remarks also included a strong call for the company to embrace a culture of diligence and accountability. He noted that his experience in the private sector had given him a keen eye for scrutinizing financial documents, emphasizing that fraudulent activities, such as falsifying invoices or inflating costs, would no longer be tolerated. He cited a specific example of a GHS45,000 invoice for curtain washing at a former MD’s residence, which he described as “outrageous.” He suggested an alternative—purchasing a washing machine and detergent for a fraction of the cost.

Finally, Mr. Nunekpeku addressed the broader vision for TDC’s future, noting that with its considerable assets and state backing, the company has the potential to become a world-class entity. However, he stressed that success would require a collective effort from all staff. “It’s not about how much money you want to make; it’s about fixing TDC for the future,” he said. He also reminded staff that failure to improve would risk TDC being absorbed by other state entities such as the State Housing Corporation or the Tema Development Corporation (TMA).

The MD concluded his address by urging all employees to protect the company’s assets and contribute to its success. He emphasized that each staff member has a responsibility to uphold the integrity of TDC and ensure its long-term prosperity.
