Apology to Sammy Gyamfi: Has Nii Lante Lost His Fearless Voice?

Former Minister for Youth and Sports, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has come under scrutiny following his apology to rye CEO of Ghana GoldBod, Sammy Gyamfi, with political commentator P.K. Sarpong questioning the decision.

In a commentary titled “Whispers from the Corridors of the Thinking Place,” Mr. Sarpong argued that the apology was difficult to reconcile with the image Mr. Vanderpuye has built over the years as a fearless and outspoken politician.

According to him, Nii Lante’s original intervention was not a personal attack on Sammy Gyamfi but rather an expression of disagreement with the language used by the Deputy Attorney-General during a public engagement.

He said the former minister had advised Mr. Gyamfi to be more measured in his public statements, describing such an intervention as the kind of frank conversation that should be possible among senior members of the same political tradition.

Mr. Sarpong questioned why Mr. Vanderpuye subsequently apologised to Mr. Gyamfi instead of maintaining the position he had publicly expressed.

He argued that the decision could create the perception that the former minister’s reputation as a straight-talking politician is conditional and could be affected by political pressure.

“If Nii Lante had simply stood his ground and said, ‘I meant what I said, and I believe Sammy’s language was inappropriate,’ many people would have respected him for it,” Mr. Sarpong wrote.

He maintained that the issue was not necessarily about whether Sammy Gyamfi was right or wrong, but about the principle of being prepared to defend one’s position after publicly expressing it.

Mr. Sarpong further warned that the apology could become a reference point for Nii Lante’s critics whenever he speaks about political conduct, accountability or public decorum.

He said political disagreements are a normal part of democratic discourse and that politicians must be able to criticise colleagues without such disagreements necessarily becoming personal conflicts.

The commentator believes credibility in politics depends largely on consistency, arguing that politicians who admonish others for their conduct must also be prepared to stand by their own words when challenged.

He described Nii Lante Vanderpuye as a politician who built much of his public reputation on speaking his mind and said the latest episode could undermine that reputation.

“Sometimes, one apology can cost a politician more than a thousand insults,” Mr. Sarpong concluded.
