GH¢7m rice debt dispute lands Ali PVT manager in court over dud cheques

A dispute over an outstanding debt of about GH¢7.05 million owed for rice supplies has resulted in the Managing Director of Ali PVT Ghana Limited, Saif Ahamad, being arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court over five allegedly dishonoured cheques valued at GH¢600,000.

Ahamad, 27, has denied issuing the cheques, which the prosecution says were presented as part payment of the outstanding debt but were returned unpaid due to insufficient funds.

The court, presided over by Madam Basilia Adjei-Tawiah, granted him GH¢150,000 bail with two sureties.

One of the sureties is required to be justified with landed or movable property, while the other must be a salaried worker earning at least GH¢3,000.

The court also directed Ahamad to surrender his passport to the Court Registry and report every Tuesday between 0700 and 1400 hours to the police investigator handling the case.

The matter has been adjourned to October 20, 2026, with the prosecution ordered to prepare disclosures ahead of a possible Case Management Conference.

According to the prosecution, the complainant, Yahaya Umar Mohammed, is a Sales Manager of Parthagyl Ghana Limited, a company involved in the supply of rice products.

Police Chief Inspector Daniel Appiah Ofori, holding brief for Deputy Superintendent of Police Kesse, told the court that Ahamad was responsible for the management and operations of Ali PVT Ghana Limited at Haatso.

The prosecution said Parthagyl Ghana Limited supplied various quantities of rice products to Ali PVT Ghana Limited between 2024 and 2025, with the total value of the supplies estimated at GH¢7,049,340.

The court heard that on June 11, 2026, the complainant contacted Ahamad regarding the outstanding debt.

The prosecution alleged that Ahamad subsequently issued five cheques numbered 000189, 000190, 000191, 000192 and 000193 to the complainant on behalf of Ali PVT Ghana Limited as part of efforts to settle the debt.

However, when the cheques were presented for payment through OmniBSIC Bank, they were allegedly dishonoured and returned unpaid because there were insufficient funds in the account.

The complainant subsequently reported the matter to the Manet Police Station, resulting in Ahamad’s arrest.

He was cautioned and, following police investigations, was charged and brought before the court.

In seeking bail, counsel for Ahamad maintained that his client was innocent of the alleged offence and was prepared to appear before the court to defend himself.

Counsel further argued that Ahamad was not a flight risk and had previously been granted police enquiry bail before appearing in court.

The court subsequently granted him bail subject to the conditions outlined and ordered him to comply with the reporting requirements pending the next hearing.
