Construction of a new 24-Hour Economy Market in the Afadzato South District of the Volta Region has begun, with the project expected to transform trading activities and strengthen the local economy.
The market, being constructed between Ve-Gbodome and Ve-Golokwati, near the Police barrier and the Afadzato South District Assembly, is scheduled for completion within two and a half years.
Chief Executive Officer of Limat Construction Limited, the contractor for the project, Mr Mamtaz Quaye, disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during a visit to the project site.
He said construction had progressed to the sub-structural stage, with activities including excavation of foundation pits, installation works and block laying currently underway.
According to Mr Quaye, adverse weather conditions remained the main challenge affecting the pace of construction.
He, however, expressed confidence that work would pick up steadily to enable the contractor to meet the agreed completion schedule.
The project forms part of President John Dramani Mahama’s 24-Hour Economy initiative, which seeks to provide infrastructure and an enabling environment for businesses to operate beyond conventional trading hours.
The market is expected to create new opportunities for traders and entrepreneurs in Afadzato South by providing modern facilities capable of supporting extended business operations.
Authorities believe the facility could also stimulate economic activity, increase incomes and strengthen the district’s position as an emerging commercial centre in the Volta Region.
District Chief Executive for Afadzato South, Mr Manfred Tawiah, expressed appreciation to President Mahama for what he described as his commitment to implementing people-centred policies aimed at improving livelihoods and promoting inclusive economic growth.
He said the market would be an important addition to the district’s economic infrastructure and expressed optimism about its potential impact on local businesses and residents.
