A Woman Could Be the NPP’s Winning Formula in Ayawaso West Wuogon

What if the NPP’s route back to Ayawaso West Wuogon runs through a woman?

That is the question emerging from an opinion poll I recently conducted among electorates within the constituency. The findings are striking.

In fact, from my interactions with voters across Ayawaso West Wuogon, a noticeable sentiment emerged: the NPP could substantially improve its chances of reclaiming the parliamentary seat if it puts forward a credible woman as its Parliamentary Candidate.

This is not a conclusion drawn from party propaganda, political speculation or social media chatter. It is a finding from conversations with voters within the constituency. And it deserves attention. Ayawaso West Wuogon Has Changed

Stronghold

For years, Ayawaso West Wuogon was regarded as an NPP parliamentary stronghold. Yet the 2024 election dramatically altered that narrative. The NDC captured the parliamentary seat after securing 40,561 votes, while the NPP obtained 27,377.

The message from that election was unmistakable: the seat can no longer be taken for granted.

The NPP therefore faces a strategic question ahead of the next parliamentary election: what kind of candidate can reconnect the party with voters who previously supported it?

My field interactions suggest that one answer may be sitting in plain sight.

A woman.

Why Are Voters Talking About a Woman?

Interestingly, the voters I engaged did not simply point to gender.

They spoke about accessibility.

They spoke about visibility.

They spoke about community engagement.

They spoke about empathy.

They spoke about someone who can walk into communities, listen to residents and remain accessible after the election.

In other words, what some voters appear to be looking for is not merely a female candidate, but a different kind of political representative.

A woman who can combine competence with warmth, political organisation with grassroots visibility, and party loyalty with an independent connection to constituents could potentially change the conversation around the NPP. This Could Be Bigger Than Gender

The real story here may not actually be about women versus men. It may be about political renewal.

A fresh female candidate could give the NPP an opportunity to present a new face to a constituency whose electorate is diverse, sophisticated and increasingly demanding.

Communities

Ayawaso West Wuogon encompasses communities ranging from East Legon and Airport Residential Area to Dzorwulu, Abelenkpe, parts of Tesano and Roman Ridge. Such an electorate cannot be approached with a one-size-fits-all political strategy.

The candidate must be able to speak to professionals and traders, young people and older residents, women and men, established communities and emerging neighbourhoods. That is precisely where the female candidature emerging from my poll becomes intriguing. The NPP Has a Question to Answer

The NPP cannot simply ask who can win its internal primary. It must also ask:Who can win the confidence of the wider constituency? Those are two different questions. A candidate may be popular within party structures and still struggle to connect with the broader electorate. Conversely, a candidate with strong community acceptance could potentially expand the party’s appeal beyond its traditional support base.

My interactions with voters suggest that the NPP should therefore take the female candidature question seriously. Not as a gimmick. Not as a publicity strategy. As an electoral strategy worth examining.

The 2024 Lesson

The NPP’s previous strength in Ayawaso West Wuogon provides historical context, yet the 2024 result demonstrates that history alone cannot determine the next election. Indeed, the constituency has alternated between the NPP and NDC over the years. The NPP has won the parliamentary seat five times since 1992, while the NDC has won it twice.

That history makes the next contest particularly interesting. The question is whether the NPP will seek to reproduce the formula of the past or experiment with a new political proposition. The evidence from my field poll points towards the latter. A Woman Could Change the Conversation

Imagine an NPP female candidate who is visible in the constituency long before the campaign begins. Imagine someone who regularly engages residents rather than appearing only during election season. Imagine a candidate who makes women feel represented, gives young people a voice, engages professionals, understands the concerns of ordinary residents and communicates with confidence across social and economic lines.

That kind of candidate could potentially transform the electoral conversation. And that is precisely why the findings of this poll should not be dismissed. But Polls Are Snapshots There is, however, an important caveat. An opinion poll is a snapshot of public sentiment at a particular moment. It is not an election result.

Preference

Voter preferences can change. Candidates can change. Political circumstances can change. Campaigns can change. Turnout can change. Therefore, the responsible conclusion is not that a woman will certainly win the seat for the NPP.

The more defensible finding is this:A credible female NPP candidate could potentially create a significantly different electoral equation in Ayawaso West Wuogon. And that possibility appears to have resonance among sections of the electorate I engaged. The NPP Should Be Listening

Political parties spend enormous resources trying to understand voters. Sometimes, however, voters provide the answer themselves. In my conversations with electorates in Ayawaso West Wuogon, one message repeatedly surfaced: give us a candidate who can connect with us.

Message

For the NPP, that message may deserve serious consideration. The party’s next choice could therefore be more consequential than simply deciding who wears its parliamentary colours.

It could determine whether the NPP merely contests Ayawaso West Wuogon or genuinely reopens the race. And perhaps, just perhaps, the woman who could change the NPP’s fortunes in Ayawaso West Wuogon is already waiting to be given the opportunity.

The voters have spoken. The question now is whether the party will listen.
