Preparatory work is underway for government social housing projects expected to begin construction in 2027, the National Housing Fund says.
Fund CEO Prosper Hoetu said designs, stakeholder discussions and the search for suitable sites are in progress. Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, October 12, he said those steps would be completed before officials decide how many homes to build.
Hoetu said the planning process would help keep the houses affordable and tailor them to people who struggle to find decent accommodation through the conventional housing market. The government is also engaging local authorities and other stakeholders on lower-cost construction methods.
He cited the District Housing Programme, which is being piloted with compressed earth bricks, as one example. The approach is intended to produce climate-resilient buildings.
