NLC Moves to Avert JUSAG Strike, Demands Report Before November 6

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has stepped up efforts to avert an impending strike by the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG), directing the Minister of Jobs, Labour and Employment Relations to engage the association and relevant government stakeholders to resolve the dispute.

In a letter dated October 26, 2026, the Commission requested that the minister lead discussions to address JUSAG’s concerns over delays in reviewing salaries and related allowances for Judicial Service staff.

The NLC has also asked the minister to submit a report on the outcome of the engagement by Friday, November 6, 2026, as efforts intensify to prevent a disruption of judicial services.

The intervention follows a strike notice issued by JUSAG on October 23, warning that its members would embark on industrial action if the government failed to address the outstanding salary review issues.

As part of its response, the Commission has advised JUSAG to suspend its planned strike in accordance with Section 161 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651).

The letter was signed by the NLC’s Executive Secretary, Dr Bernice A. Welbeck, and copied to key government and Judicial Service officials, including the Office of the President, the Judicial Secretary, the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, the Minister of Finance, and JUSAG General Secretary Abdulai Yakubu.

JUSAG demands salary review and arrears

JUSAG has threatened to begin an indefinite strike on November 2, 2026, if the government fails to approve the Judicial Council’s recommendations for the 2026 salary review by the end of October.

The association is also demanding payment of the revised salaries in November, together with arrears covering January to October 2026.

The planned industrial action stems from concerns over delays in implementing the salary review and related allowances, which the association says must be addressed.

With the NLC now facilitating engagement between the parties, attention will be on whether the discussions can produce a resolution before the proposed strike date and prevent an interruption to the work of the Judicial Service.
