Hashmin Mohammed, Press Secretary to the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has credited the minister with helping to protect the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s political base in the Northern Region, arguing that his influence and experience could have proved decisive in the party’s fortunes.
Mr Mohammed claimed that former Finance Minister Dr Mohammed Amin Adam Anta’s political strategy in the region was gaining ground and could have significantly weakened the NDC if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had won the 2024 general election.
He, however, argued that Mr Iddrisu’s political experience and ability to build relationships with people helped strengthen the NDC’s position in the region.
“If we didn’t have people like Haruna Iddrisu, the former Finance Minister would have collapsed the NDC in the Northern Region if the NPP had won the 2024 general election, given the level of empowerment the party gave him,” he said.
Mr Mohammed maintained that the Education Minister’s influence extended beyond public political engagements, highlighting what he described as years of support for politicians and ordinary citizens without seeking publicity.
He said he was personally among the beneficiaries of Mr Iddrisu’s support, adding that the minister preferred to assist people behind the scenes rather than publicise his generosity.
“He has impacted politicians and ordinary people behind the scenes, without cameras. I am a beneficiary of his great impact on my life,” he said.
According to Mr Mohammed, Mr Iddrisu’s longstanding relationships and contributions to people across the region partly explain his continued electoral success.
He further argued that the minister did not need to showcase his acts of generosity on social media to maintain his political standing.
“At Haruna Iddrisu’s level, he does not need to post what he has done to be popular. His good works are dotted all over the region,” he said.
Mr Mohammed’s comments underscore the importance he places on grassroots engagement, personal relationships and political experience in sustaining the NDC’s support in the Northern Region.
