President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that complaints and criticisms shared by Ghanaians on social media platforms, including TikTok, often prompt him to seek explanations from ministers and demand action on issues affecting their sectors.
He said he regularly monitors online conversations to understand public concerns and ensure that grievances raised by citizens are brought to the attention of the relevant government officials.
Speaking during an engagement with the Ghanaian community in Moscow, the President said he sometimes comes across reports and complaints in the media and personally contacts ministers to find out what is happening in their respective sectors.
According to him, public criticism provides an opportunity to identify shortcomings in his administration and improve the delivery of governance.
He maintained that he was not offended by criticism, including suggestions that his government was taking the country in the wrong direction, insisting that he remained open to feedback from citizens.
“I don’t mind if people tell me I am leading the country in the wrong direction because I am trying to do my best. Criticism helps me to do better. So when people criticise me and say this is not right, I am not offended,” he said.
Mr Mahama explained that such feedback sometimes leads him to challenge his ministers and demand improvements where public concerns expose weaknesses in their respective sectors.
“There are sometimes I go on the media and I see something and I call them and say, ‘Hey, Minister, what is happening in your sector?’ and then he or she says this and this and then I say no, you better sit up because I have seen this and that and it helps me to be a better leader,” he stated.
The President urged Ghanaians to continue expressing their concerns through social media, assuring them that their comments do not go unnoticed by the Presidency.
He specifically referenced TikTok and other online platforms, emphasising that he follows discussions and complaints circulating on them.
“So all your TikTok and things, don’t think I don’t see them; I see them,” he said.
