Mahama Champions Higher Military Education with Launch of National Defence University

President John Dramani Mahama is charting a new path for military education in Ghana with a firm commitment to establishing the country’s first National Defence University, signaling a major step toward integrating strategic academic excellence with national security.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony of Regular Career Course 63 at the Ghana Military Academy in Teshie, the President expressed optimism about the transformative role the National Defence University will play in developing a new breed of military and civilian leadership equipped to handle complex national and regional security challenges.

With a Presidential Charter already in place, the National Defence University is expected to offer strategic academic programmes to qualified civilians and military personnel alike, ensuring that higher military education becomes a cornerstone of Ghana’s national development. The Ghana Military Academy, a key pillar of this initiative, will become one of the constituent colleges of the university.

“The Ghana Military Academy has long served as a beacon of excellence in West Africa, and the university will elevate this legacy,” President Mahama said. “It will offer newly commissioned officers the opportunity to graduate with a postgraduate diploma, bridging military training with academic advancement.”

The President also emphasized the broader vision for infrastructure upgrades, including plans to complete the second and third phases of the Academy’s expansion. He pledged to support the construction of a modern sports complex, gymnasium, and swimming pool, along with an outer perimeter road to enhance military training.

In his address, President Mahama also reflected on the growing threat of terrorism in the West African sub-region, warning that the spillover effects from conflicts near Ghana’s northern borders make national preparedness critical. He stressed that security could no longer be viewed as the sole domain of the armed forces.

“Today’s threats are complex and often led by non-state actors. Ghana must adopt a whole-of-society approach to security. Every citizen has a role to play,” he said.

He urged the public to partner with the security agencies by sharing timely intelligence and remaining alert to suspicious activities. “Let’s build a culture where citizens see the security of the state as their own responsibility,” he added.

President Mahama’s commitment to education and national security marks a turning point in Ghana’s military modernization agenda. As the country prepares to launch this specialized university, the focus is clearly shifting toward long-term capacity building, intellectual empowerment, and regional leadership in defence strategy.
